THE NEED FOR SEERS

"And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer....and will tell thee all that is in thine heart." 1 Samuel 9:19
"But blessed are your eyes, for they see." Matthew 13:16a

Weather report is an everyday essential. Weather affects our food, profit, pleasure, travel, and space efforts. What would we do without modern-day seers? We need the fullest possible knowledge.

Such analysis and perspective are absolutely necessary to every field of endeavour- to agriculture, medicine, psychiatry, science, education and government. "Where there is no vision, the people perish" (Proverbs 29:18).

Who will be anxious about my eternal welfare? I need that help today. I need the seer. I need the prophet who says to me "I am the Seer... and I will tell thee all that is in thine heart."

I need to know the "highs" and the "lows"- the storm paths that will challenge my faith. I need to know the possibilities that are within my reach.

You might think Paul had visited the greatest research laboratory of his time when he writes "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out" (Romans 11:33).

Child of God, I want to talk to you! What permanent benefit is it to you to be able to co-ordinate weather reports if you cannot discern the day in which you live? Jesus Christ asked that question, ".... Ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not dicern this time?" (Luke 12:56).

You can tell foul from fair. Then why can't you tell right from wrong? You would not run a business the way you run your life. You want to know the prospects and the pitfalls.

Mister, you need something more than polls, investment council, business analysis and forecast, professional guidance. You need an old-fashioned sense of eternity. You need help to know how you are, what you are, and where you are going.

That is what Jesus Christ means when He says, "Blessed are your eyes, for they see." Look, my friend - look ahead! If you will, it will not take long to see God's hand in the affairs of men.

You had better see something more to your life than tonight's party and what you are going to wear for cocktail at eight. Your life has meaning and destiny. My prayer for you is that you will see it in time.

There is a desperate need for more leaders who see the ruinous effects of wrongdoing. Its is immorality and illegality at the top levels of society that filter down their dubious ethics and set the tone for attitude and action in the lower strata of society. Remember that! What the King does - whoever the king may be - gives the commoners their cue for conduct, both privately and publicly. Lawlessness sinks down from the top. It does not seep up from the bottom.

It is public official arranging for land to be zoned, rigging prices, and making illicit fortunes out of crooked real estate deals. It is a combination of drug firms conspiring to inflate the price of a certain medicine a thousand-fold beyond its cost. That becomes the basic soil for looters and vandals.

We need to climb in this nation. Pilots flying at low altitude sometimes have their vision obscured by clouds and fog. To free themselves of this handicap they climb to a high altitude of clear visibility.

Habakkuk found that solution. He escaped spiritual panic by climbing. The squalid condition of his day and the threat of total moral collapse closed in upon his soul. So he climbed!

"I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch and see what He will say unto me" (Habakkuk 2:1). The result was a revival of personal faith.

What are the majors and the minors to living? what really matters in life when the score is posted? You need to see through certain things, and beyond certain things.

Dr. Polycarp Kusch stated this conviction: "Science, in itself, is not the source of the ethical standards, the moral insight, the wisdom that is needed to make value judgments... I am quite certain that the masses of men believe that the better world of tomorrow will come through science. I think that the belief ought to be publicly combated. Science can indeed produce some of the knowledge and many great artefacts that will lead to the better life. It has, for example, produced the technically magnificent feat of television. You would also agree that the technical excellence of the television does not guarantee that it will enrich lives, to say nothing of demeaning it".
Parents need to be seers more than merchant providers or generations competitors are. They need to build family altars where sight is intensified, and where they can claim for their children eternal advantages.
It demands courage. It is not easy for a father to lay down a rule and enforce it because he knows it is for his son's welfare in the years which are ahead. But without it, the nation perishes.

Our founding fathers were seers. They looked into a wilderness and saw a nation. They committed themselves to an ideal. Like Habakkuk, there stirred in their souls the sense of destiny.

"The vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry" (Habakkuk 2:3).

So they kept faith! They believed. Without that Mister, neither citizen nor leader will have a sense of responsibility. The alternative is a wild grab.

They make or break of this nation is still carried in the late President Kennedy's sentence: "And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country will do for you; ask what you can do for your country."

Right now we need SIGHT more more than we need MIGHT. Lift up your eyes! Take a look! What do you see, church member? What vision stirs you? Mister, look into your own soul. Samuel said to Saul, "I will tell thee all that is in thine heart."

He saw in that fascinating, loveable son of the tribe of Benjamin, all the potential that could have written the first King of Isreal into the eleventh chapter of Hebrews. And he saw all the failure and all the rebellion that left him a suicide on Mount Gilboa.

Sir, get to a gospel service today, where the man of God sees through the Word of God and tells you "all that is in thine heart."

Men of vision have given Earth the benefits we enjoy today. Alexander Graham Bell gave us the telephone. Thomas Edison gave us the incandescent light. The Wright brothers gave us the airplane.

What vision beckons you? What do you sense beyond clothes to wear, food to eat, fun and frolic or the sensual, the animal existence?

Samuel said to Saul, "But stand thou still awhile, that I may show thee the word of God" (1 Samuel 9:27).

Child of God, you need to see beyond today, you need to see beyond this mortal life. May God help you.

I SAW A VISION I COULD NOT FORGET -series 3

                                          THE PRICE OF THE CALLING

The Lord led me after this to the North to the wilderness of Gumel, Jigawa state (then in Kano state) where I took up a teaching appointment in the Government Teachers Training College. Gumel was a predominantly Muslim enclave but the presence of God was with me. In spite of persecutions, I was able to start the first christian church there, which I eventually handed over to the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA). That Church was the nucleus of what today is the headquarters church of ECWA in Jigawa state. Altogether I spent three years in the North, with the Lord teaching me, instructing me, and preparing me for the great task ahead.

When I told my family that I had been called by God to serve Him full-time, they did not understand. They tried to persuade me to go back to school but I refused. Now, after my three-year sojourn in the North I came down to my home state (Rivers state) on the instructions of the Lord. As I returned, my family doubled up their pressures on me to quit this "madness" of mine. "How will you feed? Who will clothe you?" they queried. My step-father, Chief Numbere, out of concern advised me, "My son, why don't you go back to the University and read all the degrees you want to get? You can get your doctorate degree and then you can come and preach. This will enhance your prestige and when people hear that a 'Dr. Numbere' is preaching they would flock and listen to you."As for my mother, she was heartbroken. She cried bitterly, "You know your father died when you were very young, I have no other hope but you. How will I feed? Who will clothe me?"

All these reasoning made sense but there was no way I could forget that vision I saw. I loved my mother so much I had never before disobeyed her in anything but this was one request I could not grant her. The call was much more important to me. When she could not persuade me to give up my call she threatened, "If I die do not come and see my corpse." That in the African context was a curse but I said to her, "Nenta" (that was what we called her), I'd rather see your soul in heaven than see your corpse in hell!" I am glad that some years later she too got born again and was baptized, all in Greater Evangelism World Crusade.

Again the family advised me to take up a secular job so that I would be able to take care of my physical needs while I preached. That was still common sense but again I refused. About that time also I received a mouth-watering job offer from the government with a three-bedroom apartment and a car in the offing. I did not apply for the job and till today I don't know how it came about. I was contemplating accepting this job when The Lord revisited me and asked me, "Have I given you so much to do and you want to leave it? My work is more urgent". That was enough rebuke and so I refused the job offer.

When all these persuasions and pressures could not deter me, one of my elder brothers, Mr. Ofo Numbere told them, "Allow him, leave him alone." But they would not listen. They got very angry and then threw me out into the streets.

With time my family came to understand that God's call was upon my life, but in those days, at the very beginning, they were not just angry, they were very bitter and so I was out there in the streets.
I had no place to sleep and I had no place to eat. If a brother or sister came to me and said, "Brother Numbere, come and have breakfast," then I would have breakfast that particular day. If somebody else said, "Come and have lunch with me," then I had lunch. If there was nobody, that was it, I turned it into a fast. I had no place to sleep or eat but I was a happy man. I did not have anything in this world but I was anxious to get this work done. All that was in me was a great passion for souls, souls for whom the Lord Jesus died. The only property I had was on me - a T-shirt, a pair of trousers, a pair of shoes, and a raffia bag containing my Bible and tracts. I got an artist to inscribe the words "JESUS IS LOVE" and "REPENT" on the front and back of my T-shirt respectively, because I wanted even my very clothes to preach the gospel.

I would go to public places such as Banks, Offices, and parks and as I stood by watching human traffic, I would start wondering how many knew the Lord. Immediately I would realize that the majority of them did not know Him and then I would start weeping for lost humanity. Then with tears in my eyes, I would go to as many as I could reach, giving them tracts and with the tears pouring down my face, plead with them to give their lives to Jesus and be born again. This made many people think I was mad and that my enemies had charmed me. Some others thought I wa a good-for-nothing fellow and that I had come to deceive people. A few however believed me and joined me. They were mostly teenage boys and girls.

With the vision burning in our hearts, my young "crusaders" (as we were called) and I , struck out into the city of Port Harcourt, our Jerusalem. Every open field or square, every park, every street corner was a mission ground for us. We stormed and the whole city with the gospel by personal witnessing, early morning calls and crusades. The Lord did many wonderful things and many people got saved, healed, and delivered.

Next, we moved out into the villages. I did not seek for any rich man to support us. My only financiers were students and a handful of workers - none of whom could afford even a bicycle. When we moved out to the villages, we could not even afford to buy sufficient raffia mats for us to sleep on, so mattresses and beds were definitely out of the way. We had only two mats, one for the brothers and the other for the sisters in the field team. We had to lie across the mats instead of lengthwise in order to create more sleeping space. So we slept with only our heads and trunks on the mats with our legs sticking out onto the bare ground as the case may be. We also did not have food to eat. Nobody would accommodate us. Our accommodation was usually either market stalls, open school halls, or uncompleted buildings without doors, windows and sometimes without roof.

We moved out by faith and God did great things amongst us. Initially we had no electronic instruments but The Lord magnified our voices and our hand clapping so much so that we could be heard from afar. As we sang and worshipped The lord in that manner, His Presence would come down in our midst so much that we had huge snakes for company. These snakes would lie down around us as long as the worship lasted! We had nothing but we were happy to serve The Lord and we saw ourselves as a family.

Our activities caused so much stir in the city of Port Harcourt and in the length and breadth of the old Rivers State (which included the present Bayelsa state). The entire public was astir as many young boys and girls received Jesus and their lifestyles changed. As would be expected with such developments, persecution arose. The persecution was terrible. Unbelievers persecuted us, Christians persecuted us, and religious people persecuted us. Parents disowned their children or stopped paying their school fees, husbands divorced their wives (and vice versa) and even the few Christians there were then, disassociated themselves from us. Pentecostalism or evangelism was a new thing in Rivers state. The persecution was so much that the Government had to send detectives to infiltrate our fellowships to find out about our activities, but they were always exposed by prophecy.

In the villages we had to battle with the power of darkness ruling communities. We had to contend with the prevailing harsh environmental conditions and with hostile villagers. We faced many hazards as we worked night and day, trekking through thick swamps, and traveling in hand-pulled canoes or open boats, daring the waves and the storms of the sea.

Time and space will not allow me to narrate all my field experiences in evangelism. Suffice it for me to say that like Apostle Paul I have been "In journeys often, in perils of water, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren, in watchings often, in hunger and in thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness" (2 Corinthians 11:26-27), in perils of the air (near plane crashes).

I have had the joy and privilege over the years of seeing thousands turning away from their idol-worship and lifting up their faces to The Lord Jesus Christ to get saved, but that is only a very tiny fraction of the crowds I saw in the VISION 41 years ago. The 'harvest indeed is plentiful but the labourers are few.' The Lord did promise me that He will give me the men (and women) that will carry on the vision with me and I know that He that promised is faithful and He will do it.

I will wrap up with these words which I had caused an artist to engrave on a plaque at the beginning of the ministry and which I have always placed in a conspicuous place in my living room:

   "I AM A MISSIONARY,
    HEART AND SOUL.
    GOD HAD AN ONLY SON,
    AND HE WAS A MISSIONARY.
A POOR, POOR IMITATION OF HIM
I AM OR WISH TO BE.
IN THIS SERVICE I HOPE TO LIVE,
IN IT I WISH TO DIE!"

I SAW A VISION I COULD NOT FORGET - APOSTLE G. D. NUMBERE

                                                           HOW IT BEGAN

I was born again on 11th May 1969 at the University of Ife, Ibadan campus through a sermon given by Rev.(Dr.) Mike Oye.

Shortly after I got converted, the late Pastor S.G. Elton was invited to minister in the campus fellowship. By this time the University had moved to its main campus in Ife. Pastor Elton was an elderly British missionary in Ilesha in the Western Region of Nigeria. He and his wife spent most of their lives serving the Lord in Nigeria. He was a Prophet of God, well known in the Christian circles in Nigeria, and a mentor to virtually all the pioneer Nigerian Pentecostal ministers in the 1970s.

As Pa Elton (as he was fondly called by Christians then) was ministering that night he suddenly paused and pointed at somebody in the congregation, saying,"That boy! That boy there!" Everybody turned in the direction in which his finger was pointing to know who "that boy" could be. I least expected that Pa Elton was pointing at me so I was very relaxed where I was sitted (at the back of the hall-similar location as that of 11th May, 1969). Finally he got to me and said, "YOuuuu!!" I was very frightened when it turned out to be me. I kept saying to myself, "what did I do? What sin have I committed?". This was because Pa Elton was a prophet of God, who could see right through you, and so to be called out by such a man meant something ominous, so I came out trembling. When I did come out, he began to prophesy over me. He said, "You, the hand of God is upon you. God is going to call you and send you to your people. His anointing is upon you, and you shall be a mighty instrument in His Hand." He then asked me to see him after the fellowship.

I was just a very young christian, and had no intentions of going to work for God, so I did not take the prophesy serious. As a matter of fact, I was a very ambitious young man with the intentions of having degrees in many fields of life. Pa Elton's prophecy meant absolutely nothing to me. All I wanted in life was to get my degrees in Geology and Petroleum Engineering, get a good job, and look after my poor mother and my brothers and sisters. I was too engrossed with my academic pursuit to bother myself about anything else.
After the fellowship I went to talk with Pastor Elton. He did not press on me, neither did he threaten, nor cajole me. No!Pa Elton was too much of a man of God to force himself upon anyone. He simply repeated his prophecy and asked me to make out time to come ans see him at his house in Ilesha. He knew I did not believe him but, he left me to God to reveal his plans for my life.

Life continued with me as usual without any incidents until 1970, midway of my third year in the university, something unusual happened to me, which revolutionised my life completely. I received the call to serve God full-time - I SAW A VISION I COULD NOT EVER FORGET..............................

WORKAHOLISM

A Workaholic in action

Today's fast-paced multitasking, and stressful world have resulted in us constantly working harder, longer, and faster to meet up with career targets. This is because the world judges our success by the value of our pay cheques, our position at our work places, the measure of recognition and appreciation we receive in the society.

The result is; some of us becoming "WORKAHOLICS" (addicted to work), thereby spending more hours in the office rather than at home with family and friends. We barely sleep, socialize, or even have time for God or Church activities. Work, Work, Work! becomes our obsession. As such our efforts to accomplish loads of work at the shortest possible time have begun to take its toll on our mental and physical health, as well as Christian, family, and social lives without our realizing it. It is therefore paramount that we begin to deal with the bug "Workaholism", before it bites our health, family, christian, and social lives.

How do I know if I am a workaholic?

1. If you feel troubled when you do not work
2. If you find it hard to relax because you are not fully present in any environment other than the work place.
3. If your home is an extension of your office
4. If you are not a team player, and do not know how to delegate duties or responsibilities to others because you feel you are the best suited to handle the job or task.
5. If you are a perfectionist and nothing done by others is ever good enough for you.
6. If you do not have free time for God, yourself, family, and friends.
7. If you feel that people will like you more if you appear more competent than you actually are.
8. If you feel that sleeping, being involved in God's work, recreational activities are a waste of time.
9. If your conversations are centered around your work place or topics, and you always direct every conversations you are engaged in to your work.
10.If you justify your obsessive work habits by claiming that all of those long hours spent at the office are all for the good of your family.
                                                                  adapted from B.T/T.T.I

The cure for this "workaholic syndrome" can be deduced from the words of wisdom below. Apply them and enjoy your life and all that God has blessed you with in HEALTH!

"The best seven (7) doctors anywhere and no one can deny it are: God, sunshine, water, rest, air, exercise, and a healthy diet. These 7 will gladly attend to you if only you are willing."

"Those who do not have time to exercise, sooner or latter will have to find time for illness".

DON'T GIVE UP

Often times we let go off golden opportunities to break even in our various endeavors in life because we tried a couple of times and were not successful.

Success is not only a function of the positive results  achieved against the number of times attempted, but actually the determination and hunger for achieving a desired goal inspite of the odds stacked up against you, and winning! To the layman this is simply stupidity -i.e repeated attempts at a goal not achieved. But to a man of determination, it is the tonic needed to achieve a great result i.e,resilience. A good example is the "Woman with the Issue of Blood"(Mark 5:25-32), being determined to get her healing, she pressed forward in faith against a mammoth crowd surrounding Jesus - the source of her healing. The odds against her were many:

1. She was ill , pale and anemic, possibly weak from loss of blood over a long period of time - 12 years!
2. She smelt - a reason why she should not have left her house in the first place.
3. She had suffered a lot in the hands of physicians, and spent a lot of her money without any positive result.
Her condition rather worsened - a very good reason not to make any further attempt.
4. The crowd around Jesus was massive enough to discourage her from trying in her condition.

Despite all the above and possibly others not mentioned, she pressed on to her ultimate goal i.e Healimg. The question is, did she get it?

Another interesting story is that of a 69 years old Korean lady who finally got her driving license this year (September 2010) on her 960th attempt! For 959 times she tried the test and failed, but she never gave up! "I never gave up, and am glad I've finally got it", she said. If she were like me; having tried a number times, I would have given up saying to myself and to all who care to listen the following:

1.Its not my calling to drive a car (since when did driving a car become a calling? You may want to ask) OR
2. My destiny is not to drive a car (again what has driving a car got to do with destinies?)  OR
3. Its not God's will for my life e.t.c.
My take on this is, they are simply lame excuses for accommodating failure.

Therefore  "Never give up" on any positive pursuit in life. To your Faith add Determination, Enthusiasm, and Knowledge. Be steadfast in your pursuit and believe in your God-given abilities (you can do ALL! things - not some, through Christ...)especially as a child of God. And like these success stories above, you'll have the opportunity to get global recognition years and centuries after, like they did!

"I returned and saw under the Sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all". Ecclesiastes 9:11
Be patient enough to wait for your time and chance to come.
                                                                           To our success!!!

Welcome

Eureka! the shout of Victory, Eureka! the shout of joy, Eureka! the shout of great discovery or achievement. This is what this means to us. After several attempts (don't ask how many 'cos we don't have the figures) we've finally made it.
Our desire is to project the National Youth Fellowship as well as the Ministry's image to the digital world from all angles, as such the aim of this site in conjunction with others. Brethren we are in for a jolly ride of inspiring, teaching, encouraging, and ministering the word of life which we carry to, not only ourselves, but the rest of the world also.
Once again feel free to send in your posts and comments. We want to also sound it clear that we are not in competition with any other group. Everyone who shares our Vision - "To Know JESUS and to make JESUS Know", is welcome to the site. Thank you and God Bless us all.
To our Success!
